So for those of you that have not heard this story..... here we go! I'm also one to take a very loooonnnnggg time to tell a story so sit back, relax, and enjoy!
There was no mis-fits Thanksgiving last year. For those of you that have enjoyed a mis-fits Thanksgiving with us, you know how many were disappointed in mine and Regan's decision to spend Thanksgiving 2010 with my family at Ocean Isle Beach that year. I have grown up on that beach and it was a very special place to me. Regan of course knew how much I loved it there and apparently decided it would be the perfect place to finally pop the question!
So, the morning after the big Turkey day, Regan woke me up at the crack of dawn... literally! It was like 6:30 in the morning and I am by no means a morning person. Regan told me he was going to go out and get a cup of coffee. I told him to just use the coffee pot in the kitchen. He claimed he didn't want to wake anyone so I didn't argue and off he went. I of course went right back to sleep! A little later (still early in Megan standards) Regan came back and asked me to go walk on the beach. I am usually the one begging Regan for a walk on the beach but I just wanted to sleep a little longer. Finally, after a little coaxing and telling me it was going to rain soon, I got up, threw on a sweatshirt and off we went. I did at least put my contacts in!
We walked along the beach and nothing seemed out of the norm. Regan found an old and tattered NERF football (pure coincidence) and he tried to get me to toss it back and forth with him. That lasted all of about 2 minutes. Regan nonchalantly tossed it back up to the dunes and told me to remind him about it later. We continued on our walk along the beach and enjoyed the peace and quiet. (Still really early in the morning!)
On our way back from the walk, we stopped to grab the football so we could play later with my cousins, or at least that is what Regan told me we would do with it. As he picked it up, he asked me to look at the funny pattern in the sand. It looked like tracks had been covered up. Me being the science teacher/nerd that I am, I immediately thought sea turtle eggs! I tried to convince Regan not to dig there but he swore he saw something. Sure enough he uncovered an old bottle. I freaked out thinking we have found a message in a bottle! I was so excited and grabbed it right out Regan's hands. I pulled out the letter and began to read the tattered page.
The letter began "To whom it may concern". I thought nothing of it and kept reading. The letter outlined the story of two people and their life together thus far. It started to sound a little familiar but I still thought nothing of it and kept reading. I won't go into the mushy details of the letter but it was right up there with a Nicholas Sparks novel! Finally at the end of the letter, it said my name! At that point I knew it was for me and the two people being described were me and Regan. I'm not really sure what I did next, I just remember turning to Regan and finding him down on one knee and opening the coffee cup he had been "drinking" out of. Turns out, when he went to go out for coffee he really was setting everything up and really did go out and get coffee. He just asked for a second cup to hide the ring box in.
I of course said yes, and now here we are! One year to the day we will be getting married.
The picture above is from when we asked a lady walking to take out picture. If you look close in the background you can see the bottle and the football. One last special tid-bit.... the bottle that Regan used was actually a gift that his mom had given to her mother when she was young. A wonderful way to involve his family!
Whew... I told you that would take a long time to get through! For those that stuck through and read the whole thing.... Thanks! Hope you enjoyed our special story!
